  • Description

On the cover of this box, two men seated on stools on a veranda look out over a body of water. One plays the zither; the other listens. Three attendants, one inside the nearby pavilion, also enjoy the concert. Scenes such as this one, extolling the virtues and accomplishments of the scholarly class, are ubiquitous in Chinese painting and decorative arts after the fourteenth century.
