This artwork is part of Red and Black: Chinese Lacquer, 13th–16th Century
This artwork is not on display
Carved lacquers in which a predominant color—in this case black—is interspersed with layers of red, yellow, and, sometimes, green were common in the late thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The additional colors add resonance to the surface of the lacquer that is not found in later periods.
Edward C. Moore , New York (until d. 1891)
