The Buddha is shown in the attitude of preaching with one finger of the right hand extended to call the earth to witness and the left hand in the abhaya mudra. A removable panel in the back reveals a cavity that contained a group of silks symbolizing the five vital organs together with seeds, sym-bolic objects, and prayers, one of which carried a date corresponding to May 9, 1411.
Inscription: Inscribed and dated on portion of larger roll placed within figure: Da Ming Yongle jiu nian si yue shi qi ri: Great Ming, Yongle, ninth year, fourth month, seventeenth day (May 9, 1411).
