Gazette des beaux-arts, 6th ser., 75 (January 1970), pp. 48–49, 56 n. 10, fig. 9, calls it an early work, tentatively dating it about 1836; suggests that the subject is the revolt of Littavicus, based on the account of Julius Caesar.

Marc Sandoz. Théodore Chassériau, 1819–1856: Catalogue raisonné des peintures et estampes. Paris, 1974, p. 142, no. 47, pl. XXXVI, calls it "L'éduen Littavicus, trahissant la cause romaine, s'enfuit à Gergovie pour soutenir Vercingétorix (?)" and dates it 1838–40.
