Petticoat panel

Indian, Coromandel Coast, for Dutch market

Not on view

Like the chintz wentke in the exhibition, the style of petticoat shown here was popular in the Dutch province of Friesland. The scenes may depict the activities of wealthy Dutch East India Company employees living in the East. In the middle register, the figures wear European-style dress apparently made of boldly patterned Indian cottons (note the horizontal bands in the women's petticoats). In the procession below, the central figure rides in an open carriage also decorated with patterned textiles. Both the procession and the stepped horizon on which the socializing figures rest are related to similar painted-cotton hangings produced on the Coromandel Coast for the Indian domestic and Persian markets.
