Unidentified Page from a Dispersed Bhagavata Purana (Ancient Stories of Lord Vishnu)

India (Rajasthan, Bikaner)

Not on view

A nobleman is about to lose his head to an enemy's sword while spectators watch in fear and excitement. The style of this painting—with its flattened forms, planes of unmodulated color, and profile figures—owes much to the indigenous sixteenth-century Chaurapanchasika style. However, the color tones are different, and the line is less calligraphic.
