  • Description

    Excavated 1895 in Chamber Tomb 91, Mycenae .

    The scene depicts a ritual involving a male and female figures at a shrine with a tree. The iconography is rooted in Minoan art and scholars have suggested that the ring may have been imported to mainland Greece from Minoan Crete and kept as an heirloom. Gillieron made a cast directly from the original and, consequently, the reproduction is very close; comparison under magnification reveals that the copy is only slightly less distinct in its features.

    The original is in the National Archaeological Museum, Athens.
