  • Description

Excavated 1876 in Shaft Grave V, Grave Circle A, Mycenae.

This ornament is one of ten identical pendants that were strung together to form a necklace. The two birds may be a heraldic device or they may represent a hunting trophy which has been split in two for display purposes. In either case, the imagery certainly served as an elite symbol of power and strength for its wearer.

The original is in the National Archaeological Museum, Athens.
