| Sea- and Cityscapes In folk art, sea- and cityscapes might be considered a form of portraiture. They record likenesses of particular places and things, on water or on land, for posterity with deliberate clarity. Ships, houses, asylums, railroads, and street vendors are documented with calculated precision, rather that artistic dash. And yet, such carefully designed scenes are hardly artless. They express vehement pride of place, such that indications of struggle or conflict are rare, even in marine paintings of warring ships.
