In the spring of 1890 Edgar Degas and Cassatt went together to a large exhibition of Japanese woodcuts at the École des Beaux-Arts. Cassatt made a second visit to the show, with Berthe Morisot, and then almost immediately commenced an ambitious project aimed at reproducing the charming informality and lucidity of the prints.
