John Singleton Copley, American, 1738–1815
Mrs. Ebenezer Storer (Mary Edwards), ca. 1767–69
Pastel on paper mounted on canvas; 24 x 18 in. (61 x 45.7 cm)
Gift of Thomas J. Watson, 1940 (40.161.2)
Copley produced at least fifty-five pastel portraits before he left America, a large number of which were commissioned by members of the Storer and Green families. Mary Edwards, widow of Ebenezer Storer, was painted twice by Copley. Both portraits descended in the Storer family, suggesting that one is a replica painted by Copley at the request of Mrs. Storer or one of her children.
