A colossal Chinese Buddhist wall painting depicting the Paradise of
Bhaishajyaguru is the largest painting in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The mural, which
is over 24 feet high and almost 50 feet wide, was originally painted in the Guangsheng
Lower monastery, built in 147 A.D. in the Shanxi Province of China. It is now on view in
the Department of Asian Art.
Washington
Crossing the Delaware by German-born artist Emanuel Leutze is the largest framed
painting on canvas in the Museum's collections. Painted in 1851 and exhibited in the
American Wing, the picture is 12 feet, 5 inches high and 21 feet, 3 inches wide.
John Vanderlyn's panoramic painting of the
palace and gardens of Versailles, also in the American Wing, is the largest painting on
canvas in the Museum. Originally displayed in 1818 in a darkened cylindrical gallery, this
165-foot-long canvas was illuminated by skylights to make visitors feel as if they were
inside a real landscape.
