 The building was transported from Egypt by
ship. Before it was taken apart, engineers drew detailed diagrams so that they would know
how to put it back together. The temple could no longer stay in its original location,
because a dam was built that would have caused rising water to destroy the structure. It
was given to the United States by the Egyptian government in gratitude for American
assistance in saving the ancient monuments.
The temple
was built about 15 B.C. in honor of the goddess Isis and the deified sons of a Nubian
chieftain. |
