J.A.D Ingres, French, 1780-1867
The Princesse de Broglie, 1851-53
Oil on canvas; 47 3/4 x 35 3/4 in. (121.3 x 90.8 cm)
Robert Lehman Collection, 1975 (1975.1.186)
Yes, this is an oil painting. When handled as expertly as the artist Ingres has done here, oil paint is an excellent medium to represent a variety of textures and light effects in two-dimensional works. Ingres uses very small, even brushstrokes to create a paint surface on canvas as smooth as that of the finest satin cloth. The illusion of brightly lit fabric folds is created by highlighting the blue material with gradations of white.
