Carpet with flower pattern
Northern India, Kashmir or Lahore, ca. 1650
Wool pile on cotton foundation. 14' x 6' 7''
Purchase, Florance Waterbury Bequest and Rogers Fund, 1970 (1970.321)

This carpet from the reign of Shah Jahan contains a formal design of seven rows of plants, including carnations, lilies, tulips, irises, and roses. The border is an intricate pattern of scrolling vines and blossoms. The materials and weave of this carpet identify it as standard grade. The pile is sheep’s wool and the foundation is cotton, and at 143 knots per square inch, the weave is relatively coarse. However, the knotting is fine enough to achieve considerable definition in the floral designs.
