Ingres took great care with the details of this painting, such as the reflection of a window on the ivory orb of the emperor's throne. This passage, as well as the overall palette and iconic pose, suggests that the young artist was paying special attention to fifteenth-century Netherlandish paintings, among them Jan Van Eyck's celebrated Ghent altarpiece, available for study in Paris at the Musée Napoleon, along with other recently looted treasure.
