Detail of Franz Liszt
Liszt was only twenty-seven, half the age of Ingres, when this portrait was drawn. The pianist wrote a friend, "I see a good deal of M. Ingres, who is very friendly to me. We naturally play music together. Did you know he is quite good on the violin? We are planning to review all of Mozart and all of Beethoven."
