Accustomed to advising his sitters on their costume, Ingres suggested that the duc d'Orléans replace the brass buttons of his uniforms with cloth-covered ones. "That, Monsieur Ingres, is absolutely impossible," replied the prince, who laughingly recalled the encounter.
