Ingres suggested including a still life in the corner of the painting: "[We] need some sort of evening fur—the one you wrap yourself in when you leave the ball—to throw on the corner of the chair." The fur, along with the gloves and lace-trimmed handkerchief, were among the final elements added to the painting.
