Detail of Madame Paul-Sigisbert Moitessier, née Marie-Clotilde-Inès de Foucauld, Seated
Madame Moitessier felt her arms looked fat in the portrait of her standing (completed in December 1851) and asked Marcotte to intercede with Ingres on her behalf for the seated portrait. Ingres ultimately chose to adorn Madame Moitessier's arms with gold bracelets studded with rubies, pearls, cabochon garnets, emeralds, and diamonds. Her gold ring with blue enamel and diamonds (perhaps a wedding or engagement ring) is the only piece of jewelry seen in both portraits.
