Detail of Princesse Albert de Broglie, née Joséphine-Eléonore-Marie-Pauline de Galard de Brassac de Béarn
Already in his early preparatory drawings, Ingres managed to capture Pauline de Broglie's oval face, arched eyebrows, and straight nose. In the final painting, the sitter's coiffure is set off by hair ornaments made of marabou feathers and gelatin sequins. Her necklace, which features a Byzantine-style pendant in the shape of a Maltese cross, was a recent acquisition, having been purchased in 1851 from the Parisian jewelry firm Mellerio dits Meller.
