| Madame
d'Agoult (18051876) first met Ingres in Rome in January 1839, when the countess
visited in the company of Franz Liszt. Ingres,
who was the director of the Académie de France at the time, warmly received
the notorious couple at the Villa Medici. After parting ways with Liszt later
that year, Madame d'Agoult returned to Paris, and she welcomed Ingres to her literary
and artistic salons when he moved back to the French capital in 1841. This drawing
was made just a few days before the marriage of Madame d'Agoult's daughter Claire
to the marquis de Charnacé. Roll over the image with your mouse
