Detail of Comtesse Charles d'Agoult, née Marie de Flavigny, and Her Daughter Claire d'Agoult
Madame d'Agoult published a number of art critiques under the pen name of Daniel Stern, including flattering articles about two of Ingres's paintings, Antiochus and Stratonice (Musée Condé, Chantilly) and Cherubini and the Muse of Lyric Poetry (Musée du Louvre, Paris). It is possible that Ingres was influenced by the memories of her praise when he agreed to produce the double portrait of the countess and her daughter.
