Detail of Madame de Senonnes, née Marie-Geneviève-Marguerite Marcoz, later Vicomtesse de Senonnes
Marcoz is shown in an evening ensemble with a low décolletage, which the sheer silk chemisette does little to conceal. Her red velvet gown, with slashed sleeves and pocket-slit, and her chignon "à la Madonna" reflect the contemporary fascination with Renaissance styles. Borrowing a device that was common in illustrated fashion plates of the time, Ingres included a mirror to reflect Marcoz's coiffure and jeweled comb.
