Detail of Madame Jacques-Louis Leblanc, née Françoise Poncelle
Before marrying Jacques-Louis Leblanc, Françoise Poncelle had served as a lady-in-waiting to Napoleon's sister, Élisa Bacciochi, the grand duchess of Tuscany. The striped cashmere shawl draped over the chair in this portrait is embroidered with the letter "E," for Élisa. Poncelle may well have met her future husband at Élisa's court.
