In addition to his many historical references, Ingres was also inspired by eighteenth-century French court paintings. Rigaud, one of the most popular portraitists of his time, depicted the young Louis XV in royal coronation robes and regalia: an ermine-trimmed manteau royal of blue velvet embroidered with gold fleurs-de-lis, and a chain displaying the Order of the Holy Spirit. The young regent holds a short scepter; the hand of justice (also visible in Ingres's portrait of Napoleon) is placed at his side, next to his crown. Back
