In this painting, the arch of the San Rocco bridge provides the frame for a carefully structured glimpse of the Aniene River as it passes over one of its several spectacular cataracts at Tivoli, in the hills just east of Rome. This painting, no doubt intended for a collector, was based on a nearly identical sketch—now in the Musée Granet, Aix-en-Provence—that Granet painted on the site. Back
