The portraits of Madame and Monsieur Leblanc were created as pendants. As is typical in such pairs of paintings, the couple is turned toward each other. Both are dressed in black and wear looping gold chains. Furthermore, the intricately patterned cashmere shawl in the portrait of Madame Leblanc finds its counterpart in the richly colored Turkish carpet in that of her husband. It is thought that Ingres may have begun the portrait of Monsieur Leblanc first, as it was painted on a smaller canvas and subsequently enlarged to the same dimensions as the portrait of his wife.
