The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
Bequest of Grace Rainey Rogers, 1943 (43.85.4)

Preparatory sketches illustrate Ingres's struggle to find a pose for Bertin. Early on, the artist considered showing the journalist standing, leaning elegantly on his right elbow. The definitive seated pose is captured in this drawing, made on two separate pieces of paper.
