 | | When
this Book of Hours was created, the September calendar and the zodiacal sign for
May were placed on the left and right of a single sheet of parchment. To assemble
the book for binding, these sheets were folded in half and nested with other "bifolia"
in groups of four to form a gathering, or "quire." These quires were
sewn together in the middle (where you see the holes), then stacked with other
quires and sewn collectively to create the book. |
 | | When
the Book of Hours was finally bound, the image of labor for September was set
next to a nested page illustrated with the zodiacal sign for that month, Libra,
represented by a woman holding a balance (shown at left). |
