Kiefer made a number of works that depict himself--usually a tiny figure against a large background, as here--parodying the "Heil Hitler" salute. This official Nazi salute has come to symbolize the force and intimidation that Hitler used to lead Germany into World War II. Variations of the image recur in Keifer's work, reinforcing his provocative satire on the rhetoric of the fascist state.
