Kiefer has superimposed Christian mythology on Germanic legend. The powerful sword Nothung, which Wotan, chief of the gods, thrusts into a tree, is here shown aflame. The artist associates the weapon with the flaming sword borne by the angel who guards the way to the Tree of Knowledge (Genesis 3:24).
