Paper Addition

In this work, Kiefer ridicules the sanctity of the traditional pictorial rectangular by extending the left border--metaphorically, the frequently changing borders of Germany and Poland. Kiefer added the small rectangle to accommodate the horse's rear hooves. In these and related works, a horse symbolizes Poland and its cavalry, defenseless against German tanks and aircraft.
