The Florence and Herbert Irving Galleries for the Arts of South and Southeast Asia are arranged in geographical and chronological sequence, beginning with South Asia—India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka—progressing to later Indian, Nepali, and Tibetan art, and concluding with the art of Southeast Asia. Each gallery evokes in size, colors, architectural detail, and materials the context and culture of the art. The galleries devoted to ancient South Asian art feature pillars inspired by Hindu-sanctuary interiors, while the rooms that contain medieval sculpture resemble a courtyard with a red sandstone Mughal-style facade.
