Although able to defeat some of the local kingdoms, several
independent Hindu states, notably Vijayanagar, established
in 1336, continued to thrive. The military presence of the
Delhi Sultanate may have saved the subcontinent from the devastating
destruction caused by the Mongols throughout western and Central
Asia in the 13th century.
