Although able to defeat some of the local kingdoms, several independent Hindu states, notably Vijayanagar, established in 1336, continued to thrive. The military presence of the Delhi Sultanate may have saved the subcontinent from the devastating destruction caused by the Mongols throughout western and Central Asia in the 13th century.
