Khubilai Khan sent Marco Polo on several inspection tours throughout China and beyond its borders, including missions to the provinces of Sichuan and Yunnan, the eastern parts of Tibet, and Pagan. All these lands were ruled by relatives or officials of the Great Khan or kings who paid tribute to him.
