Two Scenes from"Der Busant"
Upper Rhenish (Strasbourg), 1480-90
Linen warp, with wool, silk, linen, cotton, and metallic wefts
Gift of Murtogh D. Guinness, 1985 (1985.358)

Rich in scenery and anecdote, this tapestry illustrates with cartoonlike immediacy part of the story of "Der Busant" ("The Buzzard") an Alsatian tale of romance and adventure from the fourteenth century. A French princess rides forth on a horse, leaving the woods and a unicorn and wild man behind her as she seeks the help of the miller who stands before her.
