Virgin and Child with
Four Angels, ca. 151015 This poetic and refined picture recasts the Virgin and Child from a well-known composition by Jan van Eyck in the contemporary setting of Bruges, including the churches of Sint-Jakobs and Onze-Lieve-Vrouw, as well as an enclosed garden where a Carthusian monk strolls (perhaps a reference to the Carthusian monastery of Genadedal). The panel treats the Redemption of humankind and the Virgins role as co-redemptrix with Christ, the latter a concept supported by Carthusian theologians. The Christ Child turns to directly address the viewer, thus bridging the gap between pictorial and actual space.
