The Hatch family portrait is a marvelous record of a domestic interior representing the splendor of the post–Civil War era. The decoration of the Hatch library is quite similar to that of the Museum's Renaissance Revival Parlor, which comes from Jedediah Wilcox's mansion in Meriden, Connecticut. Both rooms feature upholstered suites of furnishings, including an overmantel mirror and window cornice with elaborate carved elements and incised and gilt designs.
