Detail of Madame X (Madame Pierre Gautreau)
As exhibited in 1884, the portrait may have seemed especially scandalous because the right strap of Madame Gautreau's dress was depicted as having slipped off of her shoulder. In response to criticism, Sargent reworked the area and moved the strap up to its proper place.
