Samuel F. B. Morse (1791–1872)
Oil on canvas; 73 3/4 x 57 5/8 in. (187.3 x 147.4 cm)
Bequest of Herbert L. Pratt, 1945 (45.62.1)

Morse painted this eclectic and highly unusual portrait in 1826 when Clinton (1769–1828) was governor of New York. He may have painted it for his father-in-law, an engraver who had a scheme to make and sell prints of it; the project was abandoned. The background of the painting shows an overall pattern of stars bearing the monogram "C," each surrounded by a wreath.
