Detail of Lady at the Tea Table
Cassatt's use of a cropped, framed picture on the wall behind Mrs. Riddle shows the influence of Edgar Degas, for whom the device was a recurring motif. While he often used a framed picture to extend the meaning of his work, Cassatt used it chiefly as a design element.
