Susan Hannah Macdowell (1851–1938) met Thomas Eakins as his student at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She remained an active and successful painter until they married in 1884, when family life took precedence over her artistic endeavors. She posed for this provocative and melancholy portrait early in their marriage.
