The Thinker: Portrait of Louis N. Kenton, 1900
Thomas Eakins (1844–1916)
Oil on canvas; 82 x 42 in. (208.3 x 106.7 cm)

Like Eakins, Whistler was profoundly influenced by the works of Velásquez, as evidenced in his portrait of the collector and art critic Theodore Duret (1838–1927). Where Whistler's portrait is characterized by subtle adjustments of color and tone, Eakins's has a similarly restricted palette but eschews all decorative effects.
