Walter Wagner Florine Stettheimer
Stella Stettheimer
The Artist's Life

In each of the Cathedrals paintings Stettheimer inserts images of herself and her close friends as if to prove herself a witness of this stimulating environment. As Stettheimer was born of a well-to-do family she probably did feel at home among the extravagance and luxury of Broadway entertainment. Even though she painted this series while she was between the ages of 58 and 73, the age of her caricature remains constant, somewhere in the mid 30s. In this scene the artist has entered through a glass door accompanied by her oldest sister Stella and her cousin Walter Wagner on her left.
