Chaotic Atomosphere

Stettheimer scatters the facts of her story around the canvas in a nonlinear fashion much as medieval artists embedded narrative pieces in the landscape of a tapestry. Note how the crowds are waiting for entrance, although some have already purchased tickets, and the "talkie" has begun with a newsreel announcing the start of baseball season. Unlike a photograph that may give the sensation of a frozen moment in time, this painting of simultaneous activities and contradictory points of view captures the complex rhythms of New York, the city that never sleeps.
