The Cathedrals of Wall Street was conceived as a commemoration of 150th anniversary of George Washington's inauguration and of the New York World's Fair of 193940, which was dedicated to Washington. Following the model of the other paintings in the Cathedrals series, Stettheimer boldly displays the tumultuous and noisy relationship between politics and economics: it is not clear from her complex composition of towering political and financial icons whether government is a function of the economy or vice versa, nor what the role of patriotic citizens might be. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
