New Work in New York
Take a Gamble or Play it Straight

The Shoemaker Jacob Lawrence had a lifelong interest in representing African Americans at work. Manual labor is dramatized in this picture of a shoemaker in his shop. Bent, broad shoulders and hands clasping tools occupy most of the composition, emphasizing the immense physical strength required by this kind of work. Still, the variety of sophisticated high-heel shoes that gaily adorn the walls and pile up on the table are testaments to the skill and refinement in this profession.
