The
faith of Byzantium’s church connected the empire and its
rivals during these centuries, maintaining a position of authority
for Constantinople even after the state’s political fortunes
diminished and were destroyed. Great works were made for the
church in Constantinople and in other major centers of power.
Their images and style spread not only throughout the Byzantine
sphere but far beyond to influence the Islamic East and the
developing Renaissance in western Europe. ••
