The glaze that coats this vase—known in the West as celadon—is characterized by a rich green color that can range from gray-green to olive to bluish sea green. Celadon glaze derives its color from iron oxide, not the cobalt mineral. Like the cobalt-painted vessels, however, fine-quality celadons such as this were prized by Korea's upper classes and by collectors throughout East Asia, as they are now in the West.
